The story of The Nelson Collection began in 2019 when Maria Nelson was diagnosed with breast cancer at 34. An outpouring of support kept the Nelson family -- husband Thomas, daughter Mary (5) and son George (3) -- going during the long months of chemo, radiation and surgeries. After 19 months of treatment, Maria is cancer-free.
Then the pandemic hit in 2020. Like everyone else, the Nelsons suddenly had lots of free times on their hands. In an effort to spend at least some time off screens, the family found a past-time enjoyed by all -- creating. Art supplies were brought out and the family would spend time at the kitchen table painting, drawing and decorating. There were lots of dinosaur drawings, connect the dots and gluing.
With an excess of creative output combined with Thomas' need to send LOTS of mail (see nelsonforwi.com), suddenly handmade cards were being sent across the county.
Now the family is mailing cards for important occasions and "just because." If you're visiting this page, chances are you received a card yourself. Maria in particular hopes to pass along all of the small acts of kindness she received during her treatment. These gestures showed that the family wasn't alone and never failed to arrive exactly when they were needed the most.
